Lunch in Rye – it must be in Marino’s!

Exactly a year ago on a Lynn’s Coach Trip, we ate in Marino’s and I wrote a review about it. Marino’s; Excellent Rye Chipshop. – Unknown Kent & Sussex Magazine

And here we are again!

Luckily the weather was better than last year, when it poured all day. This time the sun shone all morning, although the wind was cold when it blew.

Marino

As soon as I walked through the door, Marino immediately recognised me and said Hello!

We were served by the brilliant Polish waitress, AJ, which is pronounced like an Aga, with a strong J. Her real name is unpronounceable in England!

AJ said they had a special Old Age Pensioners’ meal. And I said, What makes you think we’re Old Age Pensioners? Which she found very amusing.

AJ calling us Old!

Oh I wish we were called Pensioners, without the Old Age bit!

I wasn’t very hungry as it was quite early. 12 midday.  We’d really come in for a rest as we’d walked so far, up and down the steep cobbled Rye hills. So I asked if I could have a Child’s Meal.

Of course you can, I was told. (I’m more Child than Old Age Pensioner – especially my humour.)

So I had a Children’s Meal of cod, chips and mushy peas, which also included a drink of orange or apple juice. I had the orange, which was actual orange and not a bottled chemical concoction! All for £7.90.

Cutlery Chandalier

Hubby John had the same, and friends Barry and Roly had a huge portion of cod, chips and mushy peas. £15 plus £2 for the mushy peas.

I love Marino’s because all the food is fresh and not frozen. Some artificial food disagrees with me. But I can happily enjoy everything at Marino’s. It’s Proper Food, properly cooked. But I can’t finish it all as portions are huge!

Marino brought a plate of chips, a salad garnish and battered scallops and put it on the table.

He said he knew we’d ordered, but he wanted me to try the scallops.

Rye is famous for its scallops, when they’re in season.

Oh, they were delicious! They are pure white and they almost melt in the mouth.

Barry said he expected them to be gritty. But they’re not.

During the Scallop Season, Marion’s will be serving battered scallops from the 21st February-1st March.

If you can get to Rye and sample the scallops, you will enjoy an unforgettable experience!

I know that the scallop boats have to take great care. The forked scallop grabs lift the scallops from the sea bed. And if they get caught in any rubbish, it can topple the whole boat sideways.

Accidents have happened. Catching scallops is not easy.

There is a large seating area at the back of the restaurant which I hadn’t noticed before. And you can eat outside in the Summer.

Mario’s is easy to find at the bottom of the main road, and we’ll be back again the next time that we visit Rye!
