We visited Scotney Castle in Lamberhurst on a very hot day in the Summer Holidays.
The original castle, mostly ruins, sits at the bottom of the grounds from the new Scotney Castle.
It was built by Edward Hussey in 1778 using sandstone from their quarry down the hill.
The quarry garden has a 110-million-year-old dinosaur footprint.
Scotney Castle is very impressive to look around and has lots of cat ornaments and paintings because the late Mrs Hussey loved cats.
Apparently she sold all her jewellery to pay for the cat themed fountain outside.
‘Yanks’ the film starring Richard Gere was filmed in the house and it paid for a new kitchen.
The grounds are beautiful to walk around and apparently the original castle was ruined on purpose to fit in with the gardens.
Rumour has it that there is the ghost of an 18th Century smuggler in the moat.
We had a picnic and ice cream in the grounds although there are many yummy things available in the café.
As vegans, it is lovely to have several choices on the menu, including the fruit scones.
There was a field full of outdoor activities for children throughout the Summer which was great for my friend and me.
It was very hot to walk around too much but we will definitely be returning to see more of the beautiful grounds. And we can take Stormy our dog too!
