Corfu is home to roughly 30,000 stray cats.
In every village up to busy towns such as Corfu Town you will be playing a big game of Spot the Cats.
They are all extremely cute and friendly and deserve the kindness that they give back.
But sadly a lot of them don’t. Although some of them look perfectly happy and healthy, many of them are treated like things which they are not.
Cats and all other animals are living creatures just like humans.
In just one week I spotted three very heartbreaking injuries on cats, including one who was squashed in the middle of the road.
The last two suffered from extremely painful ear injuries; one whose ears were completely purple because they were swollen.
The second one’s ears were bleeding badly and he also had a big patch of skin missing on his leg.
As I sadly left the cat after not knowing what to do with him, I then looked back and he was miaowing and giving me a very sad look. I decided to go back to look after him. But we had to leave him there.
Even though I was told by a local that they are fed by locals, they still need much more than that.
If any human was suffering like many of these cats do, they would be well looked after and be back to normal in no time. But these cats are sadly left in pain to suffer on their own.
The cats are very easy to bond with and are great friends to go back and visit each time we were in the area.
Some of them can be quite shy and some just want to be left alone. Sometimes this can be when one is pregnant or is worried that you are not a friend.
The island is also filled with much more wildlife such as stray dogs.
There are also fireflies. It is lovely to take a walk at night and watch the fireflies surround you.
But it’s not just fireflies that come out at night. Ther are also scops owls and frogs whose stomachs glow at night.
Much more wildlife can be heard talking in the night and listening to them is relaxing and a great sound to fall asleep to.
During the day you can take a walk along the beach and look out for fish and other sea creatures.
There are also loads of different species of birds to spot and the stray cats and dogs.
