In our part of East Sussex, we know Spring has truly arrived when the first Cider Tap evening event is held at Big Nose & Beardy’s Cidery.
I’ll not repeat the origins of these local, innovative cider makers here, but refer you to my previous article if you need an introduction.
As our two intrepid ciderlings’ business grows, so does the popularity of their periodic Cider Tap events, held outdoors in the orchard.

The atmosphere is rustic, rural, uplifting and jovial. The fruit trees – currently in bloom – facilitate strings of lights and there’s the obligatory fire pit complete with crackling logs, it’s smoky fragrance mixing with that of the orchard blossom.
Arrive early if you want to secure one of the wooden benches, bring your own picnic chair or spread a blanket on the ground. Dogs are very much welcome and always enjoy plenty of fussing.
There’s a bar serving cider (natch), plus a selection of beers, spritzers, cider spirits and soft drinks – all reasonably priced.

At each event, there’s a food trailer. Tonight’s solid sustenance was provided by Ye Olde Spud Shoppe. It’s always a nice surprise to see what’s on offer. Previous events have been serviced by a Pizza trailer and Asian Street Food.

One of the main attractions is the live music. Always of very high quality and a different artiste at each event. Entertainment to kick off the first Tap of 2026 was provided by the inimitable guitarist/singer Neil Grove of Midnight Cannonball with his superb, old-school jumping blues.

Evenings kick off at 6pm with music from 7-7:30pm, wrapping around 9:30-10pm. Car parking is plentiful. Be sure to say hello to the piggies and you simply must make a point of visiting the Privy (outside toilet). It shouldn’t require much of an effort if you’re taking advantage of Big Nose & Beardy’s terrific produce.
