Peepshow Rillington Place book review

By Ranjit Shergill

A chilling and unnerving read that is a compelling and daunting page turner. A terrifying insight into the macabre evil deeds of Reg Christie. Painted out by his defence team as an insane ‘Mad March Hatter’ who simply did not know or remember carrying out the brutal murders of young vulnerable women he had lured into his musty damp house at Rillington Place.

Thankfully the jury rejected his preposterously ludicrous defence and convicted him of murder.

A pathetic man with a limp handshake who transformed into a serial rapist and killer, wielding his rope and abortion instruments on helpless women, subjecting them to a horrific end.

Kate Summerscale brings to life the oppressive landscape of post war Britain that flows into Rillington Place and the gruesome crimes committed by Reg Christie. Kate’s captivating writing evokes the machinations of Christie and his malevolence. Kate’s description of Christie as an ostensibly insipid man who unleashed his murderous rage to satisfy his necrophiliac lust is a gravely disturbing description of a psychotic and misogynistic character.
