Bay Side Diner Ticks all the Boxes!

By Lyn Funnell

The first snow of Winter fell quite heavily in the morning and we thought we’d have to cancel our arrangements.

But it had stopped by midday, so we picked up our friend and drove to Pevensey Bay, which is next to Eastbourne.

When we parked the car we could hear the sea angrily roaring in the next road and boy, was it cold!

I’ve eaten in the Bay Side Diner several times and it’s always been excellent. But as usual, I nearly walked past it because its exterior is very plain and unsensational. Blink and you miss it.

The interior is equally plain and basic. But it was lovely and warm and welcoming, and immaculate.

A lot of the customers are regulars, and at those prices they can afford to eat there several times a week.

There are several Sri Lankan dishes on the menu, but we all chose British food.

I once had the best stir-fry that I’ve ever had there, but it wasn’t available that day.

Amber the waitress took our orders. I had bacon and onion pudding, Hubby John had jacket potato and beans, and our friend Wendy ordered poached salmon and vegetables off the Specials Board.

My bacon and onion pudding was freshly made in the restaurant and it came with SEVEN types of vegetables, all freshly cooked to perfection! There was cabbage, carrots, small boiled potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, French beans, and swede, with plenty of gravy. All for £10.50.

Hubby John said his jacket potato was freshly baked. You can always tell by the skin. It wasn’t hard from sitting in the oven, and it wasn’t soft from being microwaved. And there was the equivalent of a tinful of baked beans with it.

It arrived with a generous salad. That cost £8.

Our friend had poached salmon which she said was poached perfectly. It arrived with seven fresh vegetables like mine, and parsley sauce. Again it was £10.50.

The restaurant is run by a Sri Lankan family and most pubs couldn’t manage to produce fresh, delicious meals like they do – and certainly not at those prices!

It’s an absolute joy to eat there.

Afterwards we crossed the road and went for a walk on the beach to help to digest our meals.

The sea was throwing up huge waves and we could feel the spray in the air. And it was so cold that we hurried back to our car.

But it won’t be long before we return to the Bay Side Diner for a meal. You can always guarantee delicious food at affordable prices, and all served with a smile!
