In Part One, I ended with the woodland walk and a stunning display of bluebells.
After this experience, it’s difficult not to feel refreshed and energised as you continue around the lake. With Great Crested Grebes on the water, and birds singing in the trees, this is a magical place in the heart of the Kent countryside.
Then swallows sweep in and skim over the water in search of insects.
For a few minutes, you stand and watch this unexpected spectacle. Like everything else at Hever, it seems designed to slow you down, to offer something for all your senses. And no matter how busy it gets, you never feel rushed or crowded on the lakeside walk.
Once back in the Italian Gardens, it’s easy to go beyond and explore the areas around the outdoor theatre, where more formal planting complements what nature offers. A bold display of brazen tulips runs alongside the path that leads to the rear of the theatre.

The path leads you to a quiet corner of the estate, close to the adjoining church. Here you’ll find the newest gardens, which cloak the steep banks of a winding stream that flows towards the castle. Though a young garden, many plants are now established, drawing in insects with their flowers, scent and foliage.
Like the lake and woodland, this is an area that slows you down. Benches encourage you to take in the planting, the flowers, and the peaceful trickle of water. Or watch a great spotted woodpecker resting on a nearby tree.

This is only a fraction of the gardens and surrounding countryside you can explore. As a regular visitor, every part of Hever has something to offer, whatever the season.
And whether you visit for the gardens, or to step back in time to explore its fascinating history, Hever Castle will reward you with a variety of experiences to remember.

Later in the year, I’ll be back with my camera to witness the changing colours, plants and wildlife, and spend more time in the formal gardens.
While history may be the major attraction of Hever Castle, there’s so much more to discover and experience when you wander and explore today.
