Rose’s Fish Bar, Pevensey Bay

By Lyn Funnell

Rambo waving at me.

We were in Pevensey Bay in Sussex for the day. I said that as we were at the seaside, I fancied fish & chips.

As we’d never been in Rose’s Fish Bar, I had to check it out.

We went in and I asked the man behind the counter, whose name is Rambo, I found out, if he made his own chips as I hate frozen chips.

I’m sorry but I believe that if someone running a traditional fish & chip shop can’t be bothered to peel his own potatoes, he shouldn’t be in business!

But Rambo assured me that they made all their own chips fresh, and he pointed to some.

We looked at the menu behind him, deciding what to choose. Then Hubby John spotted an OAP cod & chips, for £7.50.

I actually don’t like to admit that I’m an OAP (Old Age Pensioner). I’m not. I’m a P without the OA bit.

In my opinion people should ask me if I’m eligible. Then I can blush and giggle, and reply, Actually I am. but you wouldn’t know it, would you?

We sat down and Rambo brought over the cutlery, sauces and water and I asked what his accent was. He said, We are Turkish.

Why are the Turkish so good at making our traditional fish & chips? I’ve eaten in several of them.

Is it a variation of some of their dishes?

I said we were in no hurry.

When the food arrived it was absolutely perfect in every way.

The portions were just the right size without being huge, the batter was lovely, thin and crisp without being hard with pointy bits, and as for the chips – crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and a perfect size!

And the whole place was absolutely immaculate.

We’ll definitely go back there when we’re next in Pevensey.

Do note that payment is cash only.

After our meal, we went for a walk along the beach. The sun was warm and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky but the wind was freezing!

I do love Pevensey Bay.
