Garden Party Fund Raising: Cancer Research UK: West Sussex

The first Annual Garden Tea Party, held at Orchid House on 10 August, proved to be an unforgettable afternoon of elegance, culture, and community spirit. Set in the picturesque garden of Orchid House in Worthing, the event drew guests eager to indulge in a quintessentially British experience while supporting a cause dear to all—the Cancer Research UK shop in Arundel.

The afternoon commenced with a series of enchanting performances that set the tone for the day. Guests were treated to the soothing melodies of classical piano pieces performed by skilled pianists, creating an atmosphere of refined sophistication. The musical journey continued with captivating vocal performances from opera singers and musical theatre talents, whose renditions left the audience in awe. Adding a lively touch to the proceedings, a young and talented dancer dazzled with a flapper-style Charleston performance. Her enthusiasm was infectious as she later invited guests to join her in learning a few of the lively dance steps, adding a fun and interactive element to the event.

A highlight of the afternoon was the dramatic monologues delivered by aspiring young actors and actresses. Their passion and talent were evident as they brought to life various characters and emotions. One particularly memorable moment was a poignant recital of Jenny Joseph’s poem by a promising young actress, which resonated deeply with the audience.

As guests mingled and enjoyed the performances, they were treated to a sumptuous full afternoon tea. The tables were adorned with a selection of delectable treats that perfectly complemented the elegance of the occasion.

Ladies (and some gents) arrived in a stunning array of hats, each more stylish than the last, while gentlemen sported flamboyant blazers that added a dash of colour and flair to the garden setting. A friendly competition for the best-dressed guests created a buzz of excitement, with splendid prizes awarded to those whose outfits best captured the spirit of the day.

Adding to the day’s significance was an exclusive art auction, which featured beautiful works donated by renowned Arundel artists, including Karin Moorhouse, Anita Beresford Richards, and Neil Holland. The auction was met with enthusiastic bidding, as guests seized the opportunity to acquire unique pieces while supporting a worthy cause. All proceeds from the auction were directed to Cancer Research UK’s shop in Arundel, further highlighting the charitable heart of the event.

The success of this year’s event is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the organisers, performers, and all who participated. The Annual Garden Tea Party at Orchid House will surely become a cherished tradition in the community, bringing people together to celebrate the finer things in life while making a positive impact.
