Coronation Street legend Brian Capron is the perfect choice to star in Punchline, a highly acclaimed play by Andrew Kay, at The Lantern Theatre Brighton, 77 St James Street, BN21PA, from Friday 12th April 2024 to Sunday 14th April 2024, writes TONY FLOOD.
The talented #Brian #Capron’s career on stage and TV has seen him appear in the hit series Grange Hill, Where The Heart Is, EastEnders and playing the iconic role of #serial #killer Richard Hillman in Coronation Street.
Part of the reason for Brian’s popularity is the support he gives to East Sussex groups and neighbours near his home. Each year he reads out entries at the Anderida Writers’ Annual Short Story and Poetry competition and presents the prizes.

#Punchline centres on the end of the day and the end of an era. Comedian Terry has arrived at the club where once he was the headline act but now is reduced to introducing exotic dancers and bands. In a career where the world of comedy was dominated by men, and racism and misogyny were the norm, Terry talks about his experiences working alongside some of the greats – #Les #Dawson, #Tommy #Cooper, #Ken #Dodd and #Larry #Grayson.

He reflects on how his career never reached the heights that theirs did. As time moved on his style of comedy was rapidly eclipsed by the new Alternative Comedy scene.
As Terry prepares to go on stage he talks about comedy, his life on the road and on stage. Gradually Terry reveals not only how his career has changed but also his private life in a #tragic-comic tale of #clubland life and #domestic #abuse.
Punchline is an entirely new work by Andrew Kay whose previous play I Will Survive won the drama competition at the Word On Worthing literary festival and his second play Morning Glory opened at The Two Brewers in London, had a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe and was revived at Theatre Royal Brighton’s studio format season for two sell-out performances and great reviews.

Tony Flood spent most of his working life as a journalist, initially on local and regional papers and then on nationals. He was also editor of Football Monthly, Controller of Information at Sky Television and enjoyed a spell with The People before retiring in 2010.
He recalls: “My work as a showbiz and leisure writer, critic and editor saw me take on a variety of challenges - learning to dance with Strictly Come Dancing star Erin Boag, becoming a stand-up comedian and playing football with the late George Best and Bobby Moore in charity matches.
“Now I spend much of my time writing books, and theatre reviews and articles for online magazines Unknown Kent and Sussex and The Write Site. I recently retired from playing veterans football, having been one of the oldest - and slowest - players in the country!” Tony's first book was fantasy adventure SECRET POTION, which went to No. 1 in its Amazon category and has been recommended by other authors for Harry Potter fans of all ages.
His celebrity book, MY LIFE WITH THE STARS – SIZZLING SECRETS SPILLED! is full of anecdotes and revelations about showbiz and sports personalities, including Eric Morecambe, Elvis Presley, Kylie Minogue, George Best, Frank Sinatra, Joan Collins, Strictly Come Dancing stars, Muhammad Ali and Bobby Moore, with whom Tony worked.
The versatile Mr Flood then turned to writing in another genre with spicy crime thriller TRIPLE TEASE, endorsed by best-selling author Peter James, actor Brian Capron and The Sun newspaper's Stuart Pink. Following the success of TRIPLE TEASE, Tony wrote STITCH UP! – KILLER OR VICTIM? and FALL GUY.
In BEGGARS BELIEF compassionate copper DCI Harvey Livermore and his Major Crime Team are again trying to put a killer behind bars in a gripping, fast-moving story.
Tony has also co-written, with his wife Heather Flood, LAUGHS AND TEARS GALORE – STORIES AND POEMS WITH TWISTS!
Tony gives talks about the showbiz and sports stars featured in his celebrity book, as well as holding miniworkshops and giving advice on how would-be authors can write a successful book.
