Marmalade; Seville Oranges or a Tin?

By Lyn Funnell

I’ve seen the tins of Ma Made where you can make marmalade in half an hour.

But being me, I’ve always used Seville oranges.

Now I had both, so I decided to use them both and compare them.

First I prepared the oranges.

1lb Seville oranges

1 lemon

2lbs sugar.

Water.

Dissolve the sugar in water. Bring to the boil.

Chopped Seville oranges

Add the finely chopped oranges and the lemon.

Simmer until it thickens, or reaches setting point on a thermometer.

I then blitz the lot until it’s smooth, pips and all.

Ma Made

Meanwhile, I started making the marmalade from the Ma Made tin.

You just add sugar and water and you get 6lbs of marmalade in 30 minutes.

Unfortunately I went out of the room for literally  a few minutes and it boiled over.

Honestly it wasn’t at boiling point when I went out!

They say a watched pot never boils. But on the other hand, an unwatched pot always boils!

I ended up with 5lbs of marmalade and a very messy cooker!

Then I tipped it in with the Seville orange marmalade and mixed the two together.

And I was very pleased with the results.

I will definitely use Ma Made again, but I won’t leave the room, even for a couple of minutes!
