Eastbourne is Treated to a New Take on Gilbert & Sullivan

Eastbourne Gilbert & Sullivan Society love a challenge, and they will be giving their version of the world’s favourite comic opera, The Mikado, at the Royal Hippodrome Theatre, Eastbourne, from May 22 to 24.

Their latest production, The Mikado Re-imagined as The McAdo, is a new take on the pinnacle of Victorian wit and musical excellence.

The Society, whose talented members have built up a glowing reputation with so many successful productions in helping to keep Gilbert & Sullivan alive since 1968, promise to honour the “innocent merriment” of the original while introducing a new ‘tartan twist’.

Originally conceived by G&S Austin, ‘The McAdo’ reimagining replaces the fictionalised Japan of the 1880s with the rugged charm of the Scottish Highlands. While the tartan is new, the intrigue and humour remains unchanged. Fans will be able to enjoy Sullivan’s familiar legendary score and Gilbert’s razor-sharp satire, with all the same songs and characters they know and love.

This is the regional premiere in the UK of The McAdo, which has proved a hit with Gilbert & Sullivan fans in the States.
