Kentish Grandmother’s Lavender Drying

By Miriam Erasmus

I don’t know about you, but I learned so much from my Kentish Grandmothers. One from Chevening, the other from Canterbury.

Nothing was ever wasted, even their gardens were full of beauty and healing.

Both of them made lavender bags, rose petal potpourri and many other delights.

Being retired now, I find myself delighted to have time for genteel pastimes.

Outside my front door is a lavender bush that I grew from a slip a friend gave me for my “Lockdown Garden”.

Every year I have cut a bunch, hung it in the kitchen to dry and thought about making lavender bags – yes, thought about it !!

I still have no lavender bags, but this year may be different as the bush is bigger and thriving.

I only cut the flowers that were just ‘going over’ leaving enough for the bees and new growth to flourish.

I tied it up and hung it over my bed to dry. I must admit I had a more peaceful sleep last night than in a long time !!

Now .. about those lavender bags ..
